OpenAI’s Next Most Powerful Model Astra is Coming to Everyone

OpenAI is planning to make Astra, its upcoming and highly capable AI model, generally available to the public, CEO Sam Altman has said. However, the company is delaying the wider release because of concerns about the model’s cybersecurity capabilities.

In a post on X, Altman said Astra is a powerful model and that OpenAI is working toward making it generally available. He also said OpenAI does not believe keeping powerful AI models available only to a small group is a good strategy.

According to recent reporting from The Verge, OpenAI has paused some internal activities involving Astra after evaluations showed significant advances in agentic coding and cybersecurity. The company reportedly could not rule out Astra reaching what its Preparedness Framework classifies as “critical” cyber capabilities.

OpenAI has not announced a public release date for Astra. The company’s latest comments suggest that safety testing, rather than a lack of interest in releasing the model, is currently the main factor affecting its availability.

Astra has not yet been officially launched, so many details about its capabilities remain undisclosed. However, OpenAI has already provided some indication of what its internal version can do.

Earlier this month, OpenAI researchers said an internal version of Astra produced advances on 10 long-standing problems in mathematics, quantum complexity and theoretical computer science. The work was presented as evidence of stronger scientific reasoning capabilities.

Reports about the research said Astra generated core arguments for the problems and helped formalize the results in Lean, allowing the proofs to be checked mechanically. The work was compiled into a 249-page research collection.

These results come from an internal version of the model and should not be treated as evidence of what the eventual public version will necessarily be able to do.
