One-Month Extension Announced for Austerity Measures

The Cabinet Division has extended the fuel conservation and austerity programme of government, keeping strict restrictions on official vehicles and foreign travel firmly in place.

The Cabinet Secretariat issued a formal notification on 11 May 2026, extending all additional austerity and fuel conservation measures with immediate effect until 13 June 2026.

Prime Minister approved the extension based on recommendations made by the Committee for Monitoring and Implementation of Fuel Conservation and Additional Austerity Measures.

The decision follows earlier Cabinet Division notifications issued on 9 March and 14 March 2026, which first introduced the restrictions that the government is now choosing to continue.

Under the fuel reduction measure, government departments must limit the fuel supply to official vehicles by fifty percent, as originally outlined in the 9 March 2026 notification.

Sixty percent of all official government vehicles must remain grounded and out of service, a restriction that has been maintained continuously since it was first introduced in March.

The ban on foreign visits and travel covers all official government trips abroad, with the only exception being those specifically exempted under paragraph 7(ii) of the 14 March notification.

All other additional austerity and fuel conservation measures previously notified by the Cabinet Division will also remain in force for periods specified in their respective original notifications.

For measures that carry no specified end date or time period, the notification states they will remain applicable until further orders are issued by the government.

The notification was signed by Waqas Ahmed Bajwa, Joint Secretary of the Cabinet, and will be published in the Gazette of Pakistan Extraordinary, the country’s official government record.
